Just got back from a great weekend of camping at Mayo Park in Person County. It was about an hour and a half drive from my home in raleigh, straight up 501 from Durham.

We were astonished at how few people were at this nice park. The lake is large enough for motorboating/waterskiing and had very little traffic. The campground was very empty.

We stayed at 4 tent sites right on the water and the spaces were BIG. We had 10 people and 8 tents and could have easily fit all of those onto one of those sites. It was shady and flat. Estimated at total of a half acre per site. The ranger brought firewood, kayaks and canoes right to our site. when we wanted to swim, we had our own access. The only downside is the bathouse was far from the site, we did have a porta potty...I would hate for it to have been used by more than the 15 people who were there. I hope they plan to put in new bathrooms on that end of the campground.

There is a bit of vegetation in the lake so we preferred using floats or noodles of some kind when swimming. There is no sandy beach in the park. We paddled all over, sunrise and moonlight paddling were popular. There is a nice easy hiking trail around the campground, 2 miles total, (so I don't recommend this park if you are a big hiker, although there may be good hiking nearby) There is a great playground. I think this is a fantastic family campground. Only been open about 8 years.

Nice big boat ramp, some small cabins for rent with water access, and a variety of RV sites, all near the water. Disc Golf, fishing pier, big picnic shelters.

Try it!

Looks nice. They have a couple of rental cabins (great!) and allow pets on leashes (great!) but you cannot have your pet in the cabin (boo!). Leaves me out.

WOW....I've always been happy camping at Jordan Lake but I'll definitely be getting my regular camping crew to check this place out come October! Thanks for the tip!
