The only thing that has bothered me so far is the ticks. I lived in Pennsylvania for 20 years and TX for 20 years and never saw a tick. We moved here and within a year have pulled a few off my son, a few off my wife, one off me, and dozens off our 2 dogs.

I hear this a lot... especially from my boss who was from NY. It kind of baffles me because back home in NH we had tons and tons of ticks. I particularly remember a scary but fun time when we were doing community service clearing out trails and we were flicking them off so often we had the creepy crawlies and couldn't wait until we got into the gym to make sure nothing got up under our clothes, I was lucky but most people had at least one bite.
I've seen some really weird stuff down here but the only things I have issues with are spiders. There are so many different kinds and the wolf spider was the scariest but by far probably the nicest. I've actually seen some really cool looking bugs too and really enjoy the praying mantis'. All in all its not to bad definitely more than the north but something you adjust to and not a dealbreaker.
Grand daddy long legs is about the only spider I dont mind it moves rather slow and due to it long legs it is easily to spot and it minds it own buisness.
The long legs make it easy to pick it up and toss it outside http://www.spiderzrule.com/spider506/IMG_4802_small.JPG
Crickets are the worst to get inside because they hide really well and when you leave the room or turn light off they will chip really loud making the hide and seek more of a challenge. http://www.carolinanature.com/insects/cricket2374.jpg
Cicadas you can hold in the palm of your hand with no worries.
For fun you can tie a string around it belly then watch it fly without getting away.
At night you wish they had a curfew as you try to sleep with your windows open.
They can really sing. http://www.carolinanature.com/insects/cicada5090.jpg
The camel cricket was an interesting bug that was new for me in NC. I'm not sure the term "camel cricket" is correct, but that's what I was told they were called. Every time I went down into the crawl space, they were jumping around everywhere. They're like crickets with super large back legs that allow them to jump really high. They love dark damp places and are a little scary at first but completely harmless.
Oh brother. Here we go again. Another one of those insect, spider, and snake threads. Haven't had one of THOSE in a while
