Currently researching a possible move to Apex/Holly Springs area...I searched the forum but haven't been able to find an answer...
I think I have a basic understanding on the capped/overflow situation with the schools. For example, some of the houses we have looked at have Holly Grove elementary as a base school which I believe is currently capped. I think the overflow school is Holly Ridge (but I could be mistaken).
The question I have is - what happens when the cap is removed or there is an opening at the base school? Do we HAVE to return to our base school or if our kids are happy at the overflow school (and I have no problems with transporting them there), can I elect to keep them at the overflow school?
I am pretty sure you can stay at the overflow school as long as you are willing to transport yourself. If I were you I would call and confirm with Wake County. The rules may or may not have changed from what I know.
WCPSS will typically only require a move if there is a new school opening.. In the scenario you describe, the cap alone being removed wouldn't compel you to switch. That being said, its entirely possible that Holly Grove's cap gets removed when a new school opens. The school board is in the site selection phase for a funded school (E-45) that will be located south of Holly Grove, slated to open in 2018. As with all things WCPSS related, that's subject to change.
With as many houses and subdivisions are already approved in the Holly Grove area, its a guarantee that not everyone can go to school there in the future.

I think Apex and Holly Springs are both in the same boat when it comes to school assignment issues. Both are having exploding growth. It's a place where families move too and keeping up with the rising kid population is going to be an issue for quite some time.
