DH has probable job transfer to Raleigh NC..would be open to up to 30 mins away travel time for him..looking for a small town feel i.e. Port Jeff/Northport/Sayville, etc. Does that exist down there? At least a nice cozy neighborhood feel?! Where should I narrow my look for housing? We obviously would rent for the first year to look around. DD is in High School..so activities for her would be a must (Dance/horseback riding/ etc.) We currently own a house in Centereach NY. Thanks so much for ANY info!!

I am going to say maybe you can find that. You will not find the quaint downtown that you find in Northport or Port Jeff. The closest thing is Apex, but the town itself is very large and very spread out. The downtown in Apex is very small and has a small town feel. Chapel Hill may have some of the same feel of Port Jeff because of the bars and restaurants and local shops. Chapel Hill is a college town and the college is in the center of town. Port Jeff gets a college crowd too. I would visit those two areas and see if they meet your expectations

My cousin, who lived in Northport, is moving to the Triangle with her family after a couple years in Austin and spent two or three days simply exploring the area. That's what you'll need to do. The Triangle didn't develop the same way many town/communities did in the Northeast.

Is he going to be working in downtown Raleigh or in the Raleigh Area? This is a small city so all the towns around Raleigh have a small town vibe for the most part but knowing a bit more about his location will help others point you in the right direction.

One thing to be aware of....commutes are becoming a bear around here in some areas. What might be a 30 minute drive now, could be 45- 1hr in 5 years. Our area is very popular and growing rapidly!

The Raleigh zip code would be 27676, if that helps narrow the area down. It's a post office plant in Raleigh..

Just eliminate the Long Island style village from your search criteria. Nothing is remotely close.

Everything else you want will be here. Long Islanders seem to like Cary.

If you're from Centereach you're probably not going to have a problem with most of the places to live around here. The closest to Northport is Apex, without the harbor.

Rent an apartment in the Brier Creek area, then explore after you're down here. Brier Creek is a super short commute for your husband.

II was raised in Queens but everyone I knew moved to LI. As an adult we moved to Staten Island . Lived and worked my 45 years in every borough except the Bronx. Moved last month to Wake Forest after husband retired fron NYPD. Visited here for 6 years prior to the move. Visited all towns but felt most comfortable in Wake Forest. I have 3 kids....happy to answer any questions, PM me.
