I'm with you. With the exception of live sporting events(don't watch anyhow) there isn't one show that comes on any network, that I can't stream online for free. Between my PC linked to my TV and a Roku unit for better picture and convenience, I have anything I want to watch 24/7. Sometimes I've even streamed movies that were still at the theater and I've never missed an episode of Game of Thrones.

There will be a huge backlash against cable companies now that people have better and cheaper options. The screener copies of movies that go online(especially Oscar contenders) are released knowing full well that they will be put online for free viewing. The cats out of the bag .... The content we pay for in the future will be based on picture quality, sound and convenience, not just accessibility.

IPTV and streaming aren't the future of TV. They're very much the present.

Congrats. I cancelled my TWC cable service in 2011 and set up a HTPC for viewing a combination of free QAM (cable) and online content. But recently I had to go back to TWC and subscribe to the "Starter TV" package ($10/month) because clear QAM is now dead and all channels, including those that used to be broadcast over copper for free, are now scrambled.

I wouldn't even bother with the Starter TV package if I could tune in the basic networks over an indoor home antenna, but I can only pull in UNC-TV and even that station cuts out a lot during viewing. Since I don't want to invest the time, effort and money in an outdoor or attic antenna, I'm back on the TWC teet again.

I've been lucky in that I get all the locals with a Mohu antenna. I've got it hooked up to a Tablo DVR that I can then stream to my TV (via Roku at the moment) or my iOS devices or my computer's browser. I was already paying for Netflix and Amazon Prime when I had cable, and was finding that the bulk of my viewing was either shows I could get free OTA or shows on those 2 services. Cable had a gazillion channels, but only a handful of shows I watched came from that.

I've added Sling for the fall/spring months when college football and basketball are active. The Sling app isn't that great at the moment, so mainly just use the Sling credentials to access Watch ESPN. I have been watching the (somewhat mediocre) Fear the Walking Dead on the Sling. There's a handful of shows the Sling will give me in the coming months that will be nice to get. Also, wife likes tuning into HGTV every now and then and watching whatever is airing. Thankfully I don't care much about pro sports. I'll watch NFL games on the networks or ESPN, but don't need a package to get all games.

I'll probably do a month of HBO Now at some point (I have an AppleTV as well, although it doesn't get much use now) and catch up on a few shows, then cancel and let the content build up again.

There's a few things I'm missing out on at the moment like FX shows and I haven't seen the 2nd half of the Mr. Robot season (1st 4 episodes were available free online without cable credentials). I thought Hulu might be the answer on those things, but the more I looked into it, it seemed like even with a paid Hulu account, you'd need a cable account to access that content. I'm fine waiting to see those shows when they hit a streaming service. I could even break down and buy seasons a la carte and still come out way, way ahead of where I was with cable.

I've been able to take a $150/month cable package and replace it with a $20/month Sling package (~7 months a year) + the upfront cost of the Tablo (and lifetime guide I purchased). I was already paying for broadband and Netflix and Amazon, above that $150/month before, and those costs remain.

The only thing keeping me from ditching DirecTV is getting the Golf Channel and live sports.

I tried calling TWC many times to put us back on the promotion we had ($88 all incl) after we had paid increased rate (115) for 5 months. They aren't budging, bet they are giving is $105 all incl. All we have is digital TV and std internet.

I would go with SlingTV for the 20 odd channels. If they can fix their low volume issues and reliability! Those of you using sling not having these issues? [I tried sling on Roku 3]

gotta play hard ball to get them to budge. Cancel your service. Schedule a time to have them come and disconnect everything. Go to bed. They will call you the next day begging you to stay and name your price.
