Anyone else here getting to experience the Leesville traffic disaster every morning? What a mess.
There's a short story buried in the N&O's Online North Raleigh News. The project is four months behind, is being done by a company with repeatedly late projects, and the city's reply is essentially "It's not that bad. We've seen worse."
We moved in to a development off of Leesville rd Feb 2014 when the project started. Granted it is a big project, it sure is taking a long time to get sorted.
I have to say that I am less than impressed with the area so far. There doesnt seem to be many alternative routes around this area.
Hopefully it will be completed in Dec.
Because of the public contracting laws, it's pretty difficult for them to actually ban someone from future bids. They would have to really screw the pooch badly on several projects and even then it would only be temporary.
Also, as much as NCDOT sucks, road projects in general are difficult to fully account for every subsurface condition ahead of time so things do come up.
Sadly that's true. The widening of Strickland between Creedmoor and Six Forks, for example. Also the widening of Creedmoor Extension and Edwards Mill between Crabtree and Duraleigh. Those took forever. And the contractors blamed rain even though we were in a drought.

There had to be some excuse, liquidated damages are expensive

I'm not disagreeing, but from everything I've read/heard this is a City of Raleigh project, not NCDOT. That's fairly unusual but not unheard of, and I'd assume the same companies bid on projects from both, but since NCDOT gets a lot of flak anyway it'd be nice to know who's really responsible for this one.
I remember how people were screaming on these boards a few years back about the Falls of Neuse expansion. Now, you never hear about it because the results were stunningly effective. I can only assume the same will eventually be true for those of us who live in the Leesville Road area.
Fortunately I bypass the construction zone completely in the AM courtesy of dropping my son off at Leesville H.S. And coming off 540 during the PM commute really hasn't been that bad (said the NYer who once considered a nearly four hour round trip commute the norm).
I drove through there this weekend at night in the rain. I am a very comfortable driver but it was very scary to drive through that area not being familiar with it. It was pitch black, wet, and barrels every which way. It was not at all easy to see where I was supposed to be. Very dangerous!
