After visiting Raleigh, you realize how many great colleges there are in one general area. Believing that a move to Raleigh is imminent for my family, one question about higher education came up.
In New York, after you fill out Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you are automatically sent to fill out New York State's Tuition Assistance Program application or known here as a "TAP award". Basically, its New York's way to help in the cost of higher education, provided that your deemed eligible and the money given is for a school you plan to attend in the state.
Besides public subsidized colleges which gives lower tuition for its residents and companies that help employees with tuition reimbursement, is there any state government "tuition assistance program" like the one in New York? What is the name(s) of this program(s)? Any links would be helpful, but not necessary.
You can automatically qualify for the Governors grant?? (can't remember the name) if you go to school for at least 12 credit hours a semester. They give you $900 a semester ($1800 a year) for taking at least 12 credits. Everyone and anyone is qualified for this as long as they attend full time and have been a state resident for at least one year (can attend public or private colleges/universities). It's not much, but it's free money. I'm not really sure about the programs for the "needy"?

My 2 kids went to NC colleges. Never heard of this program.
There are state SEOG grants for those eligible for Pell Grants.
Note that this thread was started more than four years ago, which means that the OP's child is probably in his/her final year of college by now .....
Here's the question that revived the thread:
