For the most part, with a few exceptions, Raleigh is "virtual america" when it comes to dining...... scratching my head trying to think of other non chain type restaurants...
Margaux's menu changes weekly. They normally have multiple seafood dinner features as well as beef, chicken, etc. They have a varying selection of appetizers, also. It is always good and always fresh. Didn't mean to dodge your question, but what was good last week won't be on the menu this week. It has been my favorite restaurant in Raleigh for about 7 years. I've never had a bad meal there. I think you can view the current menu on the website.
Also, Blue Fins in Wake Forest (at the Harris Teeter shopping center in Heritage) always gets rave reviews. We haven't been, but Cox from the N&O (reviewer) seems to have liked it.
I think it is called Blue Fin's Bistro. I thought it was pretty good. I could have used a little more fish on the menu. I think they are trying to position themselves away from being just a seafood place, which is unfortunate IMO.
I had the Atlantis; the shrimp and scallops were perfectly cooked. The crab in the center was a little unusual, not what I expected - but very tatsy. I used it as a stuffing/topping for the scallops. The butter/wine sauce was delightful, but I guess that's pretty hard to screw up.
I will have to say that the last time I went to 42nd street the food was almost inedible. A couple of us simply could not finish our meals it was so bad. I haven't been back. I know some people have had good experiences, but just wanted you to beware.
