Seriously - you have a child. You want to protect that child as best you can, right? Then stop right now and find an attorney to do this properly. This is NOT the time for DIY. (I might have a different opinion if you had no dependents. )

My husband's employer (Duke) also lets him have access to Hyatt legal for like $5 per month. We signed up for that and then used them to do our wills. It was pretty straightforward, and I'm glad that we have real wills now. Previously we just had the do-it-yourself online type, but I do think this is better.

Particularly for a first will, for someone from outside NC.

It is not expensive to get it done right, and the interview with the attorney provides plenty of opportunity to uncover other concerns.

If someone could DM me the names of these $200-$300 will attorneys I would appreciate it. I called a few attorneys last year and the prices I got were much higher. My wife and I need to get wills done. No kids, just need to distribute real estate and $$$$ to siblings when the time comes.

You can always start with a hand-written, notarized document, which is better than nothing at all and does have some legal standing compared to nothing. while on the lookout for estate attorneys. I personally would recommend Jeffrey Marsocci off Six Forks Rd near Strickland, but he's probably more than $200-300. Also try Carlton Willis near North Hills.

thanks, seems a good idea for starters. Can there be things like who takes care of the kid etc written down etc? And where (where all) does one keep such a document or will?

All your directives, including who gets custody of your child, can (and should) be written down. Obviously, you need to talk to everyone who is involved with carrying out your directives ahead of time and make sure they are willing to accept the responsibility.

I would categorize doing your own will with buying a cheap motorcycle helmet. Buy a $25 dollar helmet if all you're protecting is a $25 dollar head. Otherwise spend the money to insure better safety and peace of mind. As to where to keep the document, most law firms will retain a copy. Problem solved.
