We are buying a house in Enchanted Oaks, and plan to have our kids in private schools. We haven't really looked at what schools Enchanted Oaks is assigned to, and I was just looking and wondered about the schools. Enchanted Oaks is north of Lake Wheeler and west of Garner in Wake County. The schools are SE Raleigh HS and Carnage MS (kind of interesting name for a middle school... ) . Are these decent schools? Will they have any negative effect on the property value or sellability down the road?
Just to be clear, I'm talking about Southeast Raleigh High School which I think is categorized as a magnet school. Anyone have any thought on it?
While I don't have any thoughts on those specific schools, you can check the schools report cards at the Wake Co school website. It will list test scores and things like number of books per student and number of explosions etc. Many people usually look at this type of data before buying. So I guess you could assume "the better the data" then the more folks who would look at homes assigned to these schools. http://www.wcpss.net/school-directory/
Carnage MS is a magnet school with a base. I suggest going to the school directory, clicking 2007-2008 student information, then clicking base population. With a little sleuthing/legwork, one can gather quite a bit of information based on the demographics of the base.

You are assigned to the same elementary school as me (Yates Mill) but I am in Dillard MS and Middle Creek HS.
Looking at the NC ABC scores, these schools are not "great", but they certainly could be considered "decent" by some. WCPSS: 2007 ABCs Results By School
Yates Mill 82.9
Dillard 82.2
Carnage 74
Middle Creek 70
SE Raleigh 61.8
To give you a comparison, Cary's 2 high schools are:
Green Hope 90.5
Panther Creek 88.7
But remember. . . . test scores are just one way to measure the "goodness" of a rather subjective topic.
However, there are new people that get on this board everyday and ask "Where are the BEST schools" and then look only in that neighborhood.

Well since we are sending our kids to private schools, we didn't even really look that much at the school assignments. It never entered my mind that this neighborhood would be bussed miles across the county to that other school. How often do these assignments get changed? We'll probably be in the house for a number of years, and so I'm just thinking about selling down the road.
With regard to people on the board asking "what are the best schools", I understand that, but I think the relative percentage of home buyers that are on this board is probably small... however I'm sure anyone planning to send their kids to public schools will be asking the question somewhere.
We decided against Enchanted Oaks due to SE Raleigh High. I have not found any substantial plans to build another high school, and we felt it was 1. not good for us to buy a home with no good state schooling options for us, and 2. since most families use state schooling, this issue would come up repeatedly if we tried to sell an Enchanted Oaks home.
We were also recommended a home in Enchanted Oaks which we could never live in, because of the gruesome murder of a mother and her unborn child there. I hope that isn't the home you're buying, convergant!
I personally wouldn't buy a home in the $400s in this area that didn't have good schools because we move a lot so we are always thinking about liquidity and resale. SE Raleigh had the third lowest SAT scores in the county. On the other hand, you're probably getting more house and / or more land than you would get in an area assigned to better schools. Also, there's always the chance of reassignment.
No, that isn't the home we are buying... very nice home though. It won't ever sell until that case is solved.
I would think that reassignment would be a possiblity because that school isn't close to the development. They are building new houses in there on one street that start in the $700s, and further down by the lake for over a million... so I guess if its OK with them, it will be OK with me. We aren't intending to move any time soon... probably be there for at least 8-10 years.
