Are there any dedicated degree program colleges in the greater Triangle area? I know there is one in Winston and one in Boone, but I'm curious if there are any closer? Thanks!

I know meredith college has both undergraduate and graduate degrees in music. I haven't heard of other colleges with the same degree, but there may be another out there.

Default You may want to specify type of music and future intentions

Do you want to learn classical, jazz, contemporary, etc.?

Is this for a college degree or just general interest and fun?

Do you want to become a music instructor or professional musician?

If for a degree, how serious are you in the study of music?

My oldest son, the one who is now an Intellectual Property attorney, studied music as an undergrad. I was shocked to discover that a piece of music which qualifies as a Master's Thesis performance piece at one university, is a required audition piece for the incoming high school students at another university! Far greater difference in the quality of programs, instructors, and talent from one school to another than I would have ever imagined.

UNC Greensboro has the school of performing arts. That seems like a good place to investigate. My classical guitar teacher teaches at Duke University and St. Mary's College. My daughter's piano teacher earned his degrees at UNC Chapel Hill. I think there is also a reputation for the individual instrument programs at the colleges, so it would probably be wise to inquire about particular instruments and instructors."

UNC Chapel Hill has some degree programs.

NCCU in Durham has one of the leading jazz programs in the country, thanks in part to the contributions of Durham resident Branford Marsalis. NCCU: Department of Music (http://web.nccu.edu/artsci/music/ - broken link)
