Hi everyone...

I am new to this site....and hopefully will soon be new to the Raleigh/Durham NC area.

I am scouring the web trying to find information and wondering about the differences between Raleigh, Durham and Cary.

I am a single professional, not too young...(but not too old) and would like to live in area that is urbanish and has a Reform synagogue within 10 miles.

Searching the web I found the Warehouse district in Raleigh - Are there any apartments to rent in that area or is it mostly restaurants and businesses? What about Durham warehouse district? And what would the commute be like from Durham to Cary? Other areas in Raleigh that looked interesting are Five Points and Glenwood South.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Debby

there are apartments in/near the warehouse district, and condos for rent as well. same for glenwood south. single family in Five Points. Durham's "name" downtown areas are about the same.

where are the Reform synagogues, and draw a 10 mile radius. Where will you be working, and draw a 12 mile radius. Which areas intersect and are "urban" - meaning downtown Raleigh and downtown Durham.

What's your budget?

How do you define "urbanish"? Where are you moving from?

Bo...

Thanks for the info...

If all goes according to plan (I am waiting on the official offer) I will be working in Durham. I am moving from S. Florida which is one big suburb, which is really what I do not want. I lived in Boston for 16 years and I am looking for that more urban life style. I would like to be able to walk to places, have public transportation, cultural diversity and interesting restaurants.

I have never been to the area so I am trying to do as much research via the internet - I am also planning on taking a trip to the area this weekend and trying to plan a loose itinterary.

Thanks for your help,

Debby

Then you certainly do not want to move to Cary, which is a very family-oriented suburb. To minimize commute, I suggest sticking to Durham. It has nearly everything you want.

Just be aware the urban nature of Durham and Raleigh is nothing like Boston. Raleigh and Durham are very suburban cities with a small urban core.

The conservative Beth El is in a pretty walkable, urban part of Durham in the Trinity Park neighborhood, between Duke's East campus and downtown. It sounds like this part of Durham near downtown and surrounding neighborhoods might be a good fit for you.

The reform Judea Reform is in a less walkable, more suburban, area of town. You would probably have to drive there. It shares a large campus with the JCC and the Jewish day school.

This is true. Only small areas in Durham are anything like Boston, and I suppose the very core of Raleigh's downtown area might resemble Boston on a much smaller scale (more like a smaller version of Hartford IMO).

Downtown durham is definitely the best spot then, but as others have cautioned ... Nowhere in the Triangle is urban.
