Here is what I do know: My current cost for health insurance (and I've never used it in the past 20 years) has nearly tripled since the ACA has taken hold and to add insult to injury I have less coverage and a higher deductible. Now I'm not going to sit down and analyze who is specifically at fault because it would be an exercise in futility and in reality there is nothing that I can do to change it. But there is one thing I know for certain: The ACA is NOT saving me any money. While some may complain about the cost of coverage (and the annual increases)during the "Bush" years, in my experience it was far more "affordable."

First I have heard about this split situation.
Yes, it doesnt matter if you go through the marketplace or apply direct. There is no longer a plan in this area that covers all of the doctors.

We are in the same position. As a small business owner the premiums to get insurance for my staff were always 1.5x higher than if they got them on their own, so I just give them a monthly stipend.

My family just gets our own via BCBSNC, and this year, we are in the same position as you all....only 2 options, the Value and Local. Our doctors that we like are not all in the same plan so it makes it extremely difficult.

Do you want to hear something incredibly unfair? Since premiums are so high, and coverage so bad, I got a quote for BCBS of NC via my small business. Guess what- we have many more options- traditional PPOs with deductibles of only 2k with the same large networks as in the past. Now these plans aren't cheap, but it blew my mind how unfair it is for BCBS of NC to offer my business different plans than it would for someone buying on the exchange on their own. I'm not quite sure how this can be legal.

FWIW- there is no set # of employees you need. So you guys could theoretically set up your own company doing whatever you want. Setting up an LLC can be done cheaply. And you could probably apply for BCBS through the business and would get actual decent plans that aren't available outside.
