We are in the same position. As a small business owner the premiums to get insurance for my staff were always 1.5x higher than if they got them on their own, so I just give them a monthly stipend.
My family just gets our own via BCBSNC, and this year, we are in the same position as you all....only 2 options, the Value and Local. Our doctors that we like are not all in the same plan so it makes it extremely difficult.
Do you want to hear something incredibly unfair? Since premiums are so high, and coverage so bad, I got a quote for BCBS of NC via my small business. Guess what- we have many more options- traditional PPOs with deductibles of only 2k with the same large networks as in the past. Now these plans aren't cheap, but it blew my mind how unfair it is for BCBS of NC to offer my business different plans than it would for someone buying on the exchange on their own. I'm not quite sure how this can be legal.
FWIW- there is no set # of employees you need. So you guys could theoretically set up your own company doing whatever you want. Setting up an LLC can be done cheaply. And you could probably apply for BCBS through the business and would get actual decent plans that aren't available outside.
