Yeah - since downtown Hillsborough is only a few blocks I don't know that saying a lot of art galleries are there really paints the true picture! OP - google street view downtown Hillsborough - you'll see what we mean. Hillsborough is wonderful and I would love to live there but it really does sound like Carrboro is more of what you want. The two are so close together it's easy to visit both (and Chapel Hill, and Durham...and throw in Pittsboro) in one trip.

I can think of 4 art galleries off the top of my head within the like 3 blocks of downtown. There is the co-op Hillsborough Gallery and the Eno Gallery, the arts council gallery on the other side of the street, Sovero Gallery, and I think there is one upstairs above one of the restaurants,. Plus there is the jewelry place, which feels like another art place. I guess I just feel like when you walk downtown, everything is either an art gallery or a restaurant. Plus a book store and a hardware store and Weaver Street. And a bank. It's a pretty small downtown for so many art galleries, at least that's how it feels to me!

Carrboro is really just an extension of Chapel Hill and lacks any small town feel or charm

Hillsborough sounds more like what you are looking for as your initial post suggests...

There are rentals available within walking distance of the downtown, tremendous outdoor spaces with the Riverwalk, Gold Park and Occoneechee Mountain along with the Eno River.

Food scene is excellent and has been noted there is Weaver Street Market and the Food House which produces most of the fresh items sold in all 3 Weaver Street locations is in Hillsborough

Hillsborough oozes history and charm, outdoor festivals including Last Fridays during the warmer months, vibrant art and Literature scene with many authors calling Hillsborough home.

We lived in Chapel Hill on the Carrboro line and chose Hillsborough 10 years ago, couldn't be happier with our decision.

I wouldn't be too concerned with being too far from other areas of the Triangle, Hillsborough is closer to Durham than Carrboro and has easy access to major highways...
