Hi - I am interested in getting back into nursing on a part time basis but I have not practiced hospital nursing since 1991. I am taking a nurse refresher course now and would like to work in a clinic or in a research area. I am also 64 and am worried that no one will want to hire someone at my age and with no recent experience. I don't want floor nursing and have my BSN and MSN so OK there with the educational requirements.
What do you think? Am I wasting my time wanting to get back into the field? Thanks for any and all comments or suggestions!

We have plenty of nurses > 60 working in the Duke system. Myself and my husband included. There may some research opportunities or positions within a many of the Duke physician practices (PDC = Private Diagnostic Clinic) throughout Wake and Durham Counties.

Go to the site below and do a search for available positions.

Unfortunately, I think that age discrimination can happen in any field. Part of the reason is that someone with many years of experience will want a higher salary than someone who is just starting out. In general, employers want to hire the least expensive person who is qualified for the job. I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, though.

That being said, I hope you'll look for jobs & submit your resume anyway. You might have a more difficult time getting hired than someone in their early 30s, but if you don't try you've got zero chance of getting a job. Once your resume is stored in a company's or hospital's HR system, it doesn't take much time to apply for jobs. Someone out there is bound to see the valuable skills that you bring to the table!

If you want to do research, Duke is probably the best place for you to look. UNC has some jobs for RNs in research, but not nearly as many. If you want to work in a clinic, you have tons of choices. I would start by looking at the Wake Med, Rex, UNC, & Duke web sites. All of the area hospitals have clinics affiliated with them.

Good luck! Let us know how your job search goes. :-)

I'm not an RN but would think there would also be a high demand for private duty nursing in our area. Would that work for you?

Hi and Thank you for your responses. I knew Duke was a big employer and good to know there are plenty of employees over 60 there. I would probably like to work with one of the research teams since I have done some of that in the past.
I do not think I would enjoy private duty nursing because I like the stimulation from being in a medical setting.
I need to get a cover letter ready!
