Why do people lane float when doing a left or right turn. Do you do this? Why?

Seems idiotic and dangerous. Yet I see it all the time.

I wish cops would ticket it

I think the OP means that there are two turning lanes and that someone doesn't stay in their lane when turning. I agree it is dangerous and it happens all the time at the main traffic light I use. I wish they'd just get in the lane they want to begin with.

Agree - see it all the time. Some people are just in their own world...everywhere....at all times.

Happen to me a few weeks back at Duraleigh and Glenwood. Can't believe that the other driver wasn't paying attention. Surprised me!

Yep, the world is filled with crappy drivers. That and the whole "I need to turn my car 45 degrees to the right to make a left turn" drivers out there. You'd think folks are driving 18-wheelers half the time, due to their ineptitude to stay in their lane while making turns.

While you are all right, in defense of doing it once: this business of having two lanes together turning left (or right for that matter, but left seems worse) is not prevalent everywhere. In any case it was new to me and when I first moved here I did such a "lane flaot" once and almost created an accident -- the other driver was furious, and she was right. Also, not all intersections with the double turning lanes are clearly marked, and I have learned to pay close attention where there are two lanes turning. Not an excuse, but something for those new to the area (especially from the densely packed northeast) to note.

Is this unique to some area in the Triangle?

I agree that a lot of the times the lane markers are not clear in the middle of the intersection itself; but I don't think the "I'm not from here" excuse holds a lot of water when you consider that there are pretty much always clearly marked lanes with giant left-pointing arrows painted in them at intersections like this.

If there is one intersection in the Triangle that has a batcrap/dangerous layout it's the Southpoint exit 276.....holy crap. "Lane floaters" abound there with that layout.

I avoid that and take 274 instead. Less direct way to get to most of the stuff at southpoint; but less frustrating than dealing with that intersection.
