The Southpoint area might be a good location. Easy access to I40 to head in either direction.

I would consider the Woodcroft Parkway area of SW Durham.....very close to Southpoint. It would make the best of the commutes, provide easy access to lots of shopping, dining, etc. and allows you to go in any direction to find even more cool things to do. Great for walking and biking, as well. Going from DT Durham to DT Raleigh every single day in rush hour is less than ideal, even with a reverse commute, hence my recommendation for more of a SW Durham location. You can still easily get into DT Durham for additional entertainment, when you want to.....not too mention multiple other great locations for fun in all directions.

The Southpoint/Woodcroft area sounds like it could work well, I appreciate the tip. The commute to Raleigh would be a bit more reasonable than coming from DT Durham and it would still be a quick drive/uber ride to DT Durham or Chapel Hill. I'll add this to the list of areas I'm looking at.

As far as DT Durham goes, I've read that Old West Durham, Trinity Park, Brightleaf/near Duke East would be good places to look. Any areas in particular that I should avoid? I spoke to someone that said he always used to stay west of Roxboro Street, but he was there several years ago so I'm not sure if that advice is still relevant.

There are actually public transportation options from downtown Durham to Raleigh and Chapel Hill. If you are interested look into triangle transit's DRX (to Raleigh) and 405 (to Chapel Hill). I'm not super familiar with the DRX but the 405 is actually a pretty quick, easy communte. I've used it a lot.

Old West and Trinity Park (and Trinity Heights) are all great neighborhoods. You can also include Watts-Hillandale the western halfs of Duke Park and Old North Durham. Some parts east of Roxboro are fantastic (the area around East Markham Ave for instance is gorgeous), other parts are still in the process of being gentrified so it depends on what you feel comfortable with.

If you are interested in an apartment complex there is also West Village, Whetstone, the Apartments at American Tobacco, 605 West, Berkshire 9th Street and Station 9.

For people in their late twenties (which I am) the downtown Durham area and downtown Raleigh area are definitely the best options.
