I'm a recent Northern transplant (boo, hiss!) and before I came here I had heard of Raleigh and Chapel Hill and vaguely knew of Cary as a bedroom suburb of Raleigh. My perception was that Chapel Hill had the higher "status" because the real estate was higher in general and I knew that the schools were considered the best in the state.
I was open to living anywhere in the triangle, but opted for Chapel Hill solely because trying to figure out the Wake County School system was giving me a headache. We rent right now and perhaps we'll end up moving to Cary when it's time to buy since there is a larger stock of affordable single family homes.
But when I hear the word STATUS, I think of Chapel Hill and some lovely areas in Raleigh.

Somewhere around the 1700 or 1800 block of St Mary's in Raleigh...or one of those beautiful old homes on or just off East Franklin St. in Chapel Hill That's status to me too.
I'll add one more thought: The focus group was incorrectly designed. The buikders shoukd have been asking consumers - potential buyers. I'd bet a fair anount of money that consumers would say Chapel Hill = status. Especially if those consumers are from out of the area, new to the area or wealthy. Just my opinion.
for all I know, they had other groups and maybe some were potential buyers.
My group was 12 VERY experienced Realtors who typically sell in the areas we were discussing. CH and Cary were just 2. There were others. This was just ONE question.

Yup. Though I'd toss in some pockets Cary and Durham with estate-level housing, I usually think of certain areas ITB in Raleigh or East Franklin in CH when I think of "status."

Forest Hills in Durham I don't get around Cary like I used to, but McGregor Downs was the place to live at one time.
If one lives in Governor's Club then what city is used for the address?
Governors club has a Chapel Hill address but it is in Chatham County. So it lacks the thing that drives up home prices in Chapel Hill...the school system.
