Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for cheap catering options for my child's birthday party. It will be at a firehouse during lunchtime. There will be 15 adults and 6 kids, ages 2-9. I would like to have enough food to feed the firemen, but I'm not sure how many will be there. I would like something somewhat healthy that everyone will enjoy, yet affordable for a college student. I got prices from a few sub places, but it seems like a waste of money for the amount of food. Any suggestions?

North Raleigh. I haven't set an actual price. I'm saving money on the venue, so I was willing to spend $ on food. I can't find my notes about the subs but I want to say it was around $40 for 10 portions (not full subs).

So if I went the sub route, I would need to spend at least 120, and that wouldn't be enough if the adults ate more than one portion.

I recommend buying some platters (sandwich, veggie, fruit) from a local warehouse club (BJs or Costco.) It will be more than enough food at a fair price. You can also grab a case of water and juice there.

Consider DIY baked rigatoni or baked ziti. Meatless, in big aluminum tins. Buy desert.

Pizza. Probably get a discount for several pies. If the have sicilian (NY Pizza does), then you get more bang for the buck.

I didn't even think about platters from Costco. I just got a membership, so I'll check it out. I also really like the baked ziti idea. Thank you all!

It is always more economical to 'do it yourself'. Set out all the ingredients for a bunch of subs and let people make their own. Take the leftovers home and eat them for a few days.

If the firehouse doesn't provide plates and utensils you can get that stuff at the dollar store, they even make fake silverware now that looks real.

We had a party at a firehouse once, it was great, the firemen loved showing the kids the equipment and the kids, of course, loved that as well.
