Pretty sure I saw a Meteorite fall near Dorothea Dix around 6:40pm. Is there somewhere these things are supposed to be reported? And no, I wasn't seeing it from Dorothea Dix

So you were at the prison, right?

Anyway, that's pretty cool! I don't think I've ever seen one. Whenever I see the word "meteorite," I think of Joe Dirt. "I'm Joe Dirt and you're Joe Meteorite!" Dig it!

If know exactly where it landed, you might be in for a huge payday if you can find it!

No idea where it landed, but I was driving west on MLK and saw it ahead of me just before I got to the S Saunders exit. It kinda flared up and then went dark right above the tree line ahead. If you find it, just let me rub it for good luck!

Nope, I've seen plenty of those. This thing was coming down at an angle, getting brighter, then flashed out. Looked almost like a flare.

The value of any meteorite is dependent on size and where it came from (geological/chemical makeup). When I was working down in Antarctica, there would be scientists that come down every summer with volunteers to hunt down meteorites. Then would speed across the ice and snow on snowmobiles looking for anything that was dark and wound up finding hundreds each summer season.

So glad to see this post. I saw it from I40 near southpoint mall, going west away from me. it did appear to blink out near the horizon. very bright !

Immediately after, a helicopter flew overhead along I40 which is also strange.

Combined, it was a very X files moment.

I'm curious - can they be identified with magnets?

Two of the three types of meteorites (stony-iron and iron) can be located with a metal detectors. I guess a magnet, depending on the strength and the amount of metal in the meteorite could be used to see if it is magnetic. Also it will weigh more than it looks like it should weigh, if you know what I mean, due to the metal content.
