Don't eat at the Joe's Crab Shack in Merrillville. That's the only Joe's I've ever complained about out of all the one's I've eaten at. Also watch out for potholes in Indiana. I saw some I thought would swallow my car when I was there...
I am planning to make a quick driving trip to Merrillville, Indiana in late March. Anybody who has driven that way willing to share any tips?
Thx
There's nothing quick about that sort of drive.
As an aside, people over-engineer these sort of trips; don't make that mistake. Driving to Indiana is not like driving to New York or Boston, the only meaningful traffic you'll encounter will be around the very few urban centers in Indiana and just plan around that.
I've driven to the northern Chicago suburbs often (15 hours from here). It is a pretty easy drive through Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio (35 through Chillicothe and Dayton). There are tolls in WVA, but a shorter drive than 40 through Asheville, TN, and KY. 65 in Indiana is a racetrack. Be prepared to be doing at least 75mph and still be passed. Other than Indianapolis and a crash or roadwork here or there, it is pretty free flowing.
I drive back and forth to Indy area from Raleigh 4-5 times a year.
Take the West Virginia route, not the one that goes west through Asheville, NC. It looks only a little longer and maybe more interesting, but don't fall for it unless you want to add some significant time! And if you take this route get gas before you leave Asheville because there's not a station for a LONG time after that.
There's nowhere easy and reasonable to eat for an hour before Charleston, WV or 30 minutes after.
Don't hit traffic on the way out of town in Greensboro or Winston Salem or you'll start out the trip exhausted and frustrated. Traffic doesn't seem to be too bad elsewhere. We go through Louisville though and you will probably go through Ohio so maybe there or in Indy depending on time of day. There's awful construction in Louisville now so you'll get to avoid that!
Thanks for all the feedback. I decided WV route - 77/64 to Charlston then 35 to Dayton, 70 to Indianapolis and 65 to Merriville
