I would like to spend $5000-8000 on a piano for my 7 year old but don't know where to start. Any recommandation on stores or special sales event? thanks a lot!
Raleigh and Durham, NC Piano Distributors --The Southeast's Largest Piano Dealer in Durham near Raleigh. We carry keyboards also. (http://www.pianodistributors.com/ndu.php - broken link)
We bought our piano from Maus Piano and Organ 10 or so years ago and was very happy with the experience. The various universities in the area also tend to sell their pianos once a year, which may be worth checking out as well.
Thanks for all the inputs! For used pianos, should I go to Craiglist or other sources? As for the university sale, I knew I missed one last month which held by Duke.

I was just going to suggest the Universities in your area. Possibly figure how far you are willing to drive to get it and check other Universities in other areas.
I suggest that you start with a smaller, less expensive electronic keyboard. They come in all shapes, sizes, levels of fanciness, and prices. As I music teacher, I see MANY students begin an instrument, only to quit a few years down the road. I'm not saying that your child will do this. However, if this does happen and you have purchased a piano, you are stuck with an expensive (and extremely heavy!) piece of furniture.

Thanks for your advice! I do have an electronic keyboard at home, but the piano teacher I talked to would like her student having a real piano at home to practice. I don't mind buying a used one. Some people suggest to contact local piano tuner to get referral and info about some private sellers. Any recommendations on the local tuners will be appreciated! By the way, I live in Chapel Hill. Thanks
Have you considered renting? We rented from Maus Pianos until we were sure the kids were going to like piano and continue. Maus credited the rental payments to the purchase price, once we were ready to buy. I also strongly recommend Ruggiero Pianos.

There was just a sale at the fair grounds this past weekend for used pianos. Here is the link that the NC Fairground's calendar has for the company.
