My husband and I plan to relocate to Raleigh, NC when I obtain my master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in about 2 or 3 years. We are currently considering Wake Forest as it seems to suit our lifestyle and has many of the types of amenities we are used to having in northern Kentucky. (We live just south of Cincinnati, OH near Alexandria, KY.) As someone who has never moved at all before, let alone relocated to a different metropolitan area, I thought it might be nice to get to know some people in the Raleigh/Durham area online in the meantime. Any suggestions?
Well hey there's a lot of us on this forum :P The rate this metro is going, a lot will have changed in 3 years. I've moved every 2-4 years my whole life (military), so trust me it will be a fun adventure You will have new things to try and do and see for ever :P
Thanks! I'm off to a good start then! I've never moved before, but I look forward to getting away from Cincinnati and to an address more our style and pace.
Renember that your job locations will make a big difference to wjere you eventually decide to live, so don't fall in love with WF. Though it's nice up there, it's not the only nice area in The Triangle.

I'm curious about this statement (I used to live in Cincinnati). What is it that you don't like about Cincinnati that you are hoping will change with a move here? To me both areas have some similarities. Although I like the weather here much better!

We have less congestion and traffic and Cincy is a bigger city in many ways. I mean, Raleigh and Cincinnati have more in common than Raleigh and New York, but there's clearly an overall size and complexity gap between us and them. Now if you were to make the argument that Charlotte and Cincinnati were similar I'd just agree and leave it alone.
As for the original post, I'd hang out on this forum for a year or so to get a sense of the pulse of things in the Triangle. As you get closer to arriving I would expand out to the meet up sites that more tightly align with personal values and interests (so much changes year to year, this would be too early to start setting social hooks).

Are you doing a degree program that keeps you in Kentucky?

I agree with NYC2RDU about meetups. Although I do agree there are friendly people on this forum, I feel it's mostly about the transfer of information and ideas than actual friendship building.
I'm not sure that anyone here has ever made plans to meet each other?

It's rare. I have met a few people off City-Data, but yes this isn't really a place to build in-person friendships. More so to get an idea of what areas are like and such, like you said.
