They need to make money so what better way to do it in tickets. Its impossible to drive the speed limit all the time. If you think you can then you are lying to yourself, one exception to this is a person who drive way to slow all the time. You can not look at your speed monitor all the time and there are time when you accidentally go over the speed limit. That was the reason for the 1 - 9 miles over in the first place.
This is going to make for a very interesting trip up to Virginia this weekend. I haven't decided which route I'm taking yet, but I can't imagine driving at the posted speed limit on either I-85 or I-95, especially when so many of the travelers on those roads are from out of state and will have no idea about this crackdown. So they'll all be doing their usual 10-15 mph over. Going the speed limit could actually be dangerous
I would take I-85, since it avoids the Emporia $peed trap on I-95 in Virginia. NC's statewide $peed trap is temporary. VA's is 24-7-365. Also, be aware that if you get caught doing 80mph or more in Virginia, even in a 70mph zone, you'll likely get charged with Reckless Driving, which is a Class 1 misdemeanor criminal charge in VA. Don't forget, radar detectors are illegal in VA. Waze is your friend.
If you're significantly speeding, you'll probably have a better chance of being pulled over but if you're going 1-5 mph and following traffic, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Waze does help if you're worried

South Hill speed traps on 85 can be just as bad sometimes.
Depending on where folks are leaving from, I'd recommend 95 over 85 for the time being, as 85 is seeing some slowdowns with the construction around Henderson. That construction is supposed to continue to 2020, so it'll be awhile.

Well, I wouldn't get caught doing 80mph or more (I don't), and I don't own a radar detector. So not a problem.
Never be the fastest car out on the road, let a couple others take one for the team. A cop can't pull over everyone all at one time; better they get the person doing over 70, there will be plenty of them.
Not only that, some judges will consider a one-over ticket to be inherently within a reasonable doubt and will just dismiss them on the spot. Maybe not all judges, but some. That's a gigantic waste of everyone's time -- the driver's, the LEO's, the judge's, etc.

Of course. But it appeases the small minded "one MPH over is still over" crowd.
Personally, I'd rather see them pull over the dolts who drive slow in the left lane.
