I've lived less than 1500 ft from I-40 -- it will always haunt you. Don't do it.

And trees don't do shiitake for noise. Read all the studies and they'll tell you that. The only thing that "works" is *mass* (concrete walls, earth berms).

Well 1500 feet is more than a quarter of a mile. I am guessing (but don't know) there will be a sound barrier in place? I am not sure of the rules, but there is an existing street right there between the property you mention and where 540 is going (Oxford Green). I don't know if because it's an older established neighborhood they get a sound barrier built. Although it does look like a few of those houses are going to be lost to the exit ramp.

Driving down 540 there are a lot of developments basically backing right up to 540) where there are not sound barriers so I don't know how it's determined who gets what.

If you haven't seen it, someone posted a link to this page a while ago with highly detailed maps. You can see the street you mentioned and where 540 is going (there is a thick patch of woods there now). Go here - NCDOT: Complete 540 and download sheet 1 (it's a large file so don't try opening in your browser). You can zoom in, look to the far right to find the place you are looking for.

I drive down Bells Lake a couple of times a week from Optimist Farm road, according to that map, they are widening it to 300 feet from ten-ten past Truelove but not the entire way to Optimist Farm which I think is going to be a mistake.

I live right between US1 and Highway 15-501, less than 400 feet from either
of them. Both are very busy major highways with a lot of traffic and I've gotten
used to the noise. I never even notice it anymore....

Folks, I really appreciate all these responses. Thank you! We are passing on this house, but we are still attracted to the general area. Being aware of the 540 plans is definitely good knowledge to have at this stage.

Just like airport noise, each person's tolerance for traffic noise is different. There are many variable. I have about 550 feet of woods between my house and 540 in Raleigh. Of course you can hear traffic, but it doesn't bother me and I like the close access.

1500 feet is way too close for us. We looked at a beautiful home on almost a full acre up off falls in n Raleigh and we couldn't figure out why it was priced so aggressively. Then we went to see it and the realtor called it before we had taken five steps from the car. 540. It's like living next to a speedway only this one is 24-7-365

Best of luck.
