I had a total thyroidectomy and RAI treatment a few years ago. I've been going to Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC for follow-ups. I'll have my last check up at MSKCC this year and then I'm 5 years cancer free (woo!)
So looking for recommendations for a great endocrinologist who really understands post ThyCa complexities (I lost parathyroids too so I have to have my calcium levels monitored too in addition to thyroid meds)...
I recommend Duke Endo. They have several doctors who specialize in thyroid and thyroid cancer. I can't recommend a specific doctor, but I'm sure if you called, they could point you in the right direction. They're located right next to the cancer center, and being in the Duke system allows the doctors to work together to design a specific plan for your situation.

I thought in order to see a specialist at Duke, you had to have a referral from a primary care doctor? My memory is a little foggy on that.

No, not necessarily. Many insurance companies require that referral, but DH has seen many (too many) specialists without a referral. (endocrinologists may require referral.)

Thanks! I can probably get a referral from my current endo at Sloan Kettering if needed...
From a local endo standpoint, anyone see and like Dr. Yoo at Cary Endocrine?
My understanding is that I would probably continue to go to a Duke-type cancer treatment center for my bi-annual/annual tests and scans, but my current endo at Sloan Kettering recommends that I see a local endo on a more frequent basis (than he can accommodate) to keep my T3/T4 and calcium levels proper...
I'll be hitting ten years myself this summer. I've had Dr. Michael Thomas at Carolina Endocrine following me, but, my case was really simple, I adjusted to Synthroid with only one change in dosage, and my recovery has been easy peasy. If your case is complex, or squirrelly in some way, you'll want to do further research.
Also, the THyCA support group meets once a month. If you're interested, PM me, and I'll track down the info. Kathryn Wall runs it, and they used to meet at RexHealth Center on Lake Boone Trail. The group might also show up on a search. I attended a couple meetings before I picked Dr. Thomas based on member input.

Good luck to you!
I'm not personally effected by thyroid cancer. But I want to personally say how grateful I am for people who postt information and advice like this. I've used (and abused) many boards on CD - but this is certainly one of the best.

I absolutely agree! I can't imagine that our move to Apex would be going so well without the extremely helpful (and friendly/supportive) advice on CD.
Congratulations on your five year Nocancerversary! Who was your endo at MSKCC, may I ask? Was it Dr. Tuttle?
