Cemetery Road as shown on Google Maps is a holdover from the 1980s. It's the original alignment of what used to be called Mt Herman Road, which was wiped out (along with the original Mt Herman Baptist Church) when the area was reconstructed for the "new" cargo area where UPS, Fedex, are. Mt Herman Road was the original back door into RDU from US 70. About the only trace of the pre-1990 layout of that vicinity is the cemetery itself. A few years after that, the rebuild of US 70 at Westgate and the construction of I-540 made even more changes to the old Mt Herman Road layout.

Roads in and around RDU were changing drastically almost year-by-year throughout the 1980s. People who moved to the Triangle after 1990 would be surprised.

That's for sure. In high school and right after, we used to go park out on the fence line at the end of the runway where all the cargo stuff is now and watch planes come and go (and other stuff ). There would always be a few cars there and amazingly, no one came and arrested everyone.

And the entire entrance area from 40 used to be two separate two lane roads, one of which didn't even go to the terminal area but connected around back. You can still see the old road behind the fence as you drive by. I guess this was Mt Herman.
