I'd like to get my mom a class of some kind for her to take her dog to for training/obedience. Any recommendations? She is trying to discipline the dog like she disciplined me with similar results - none!

What's your location? Paws 4 Ever in Mebane is great if that's close.

That would be very convenient. Any idea if they are effective?

If she might take time to research a bit herself, the NILIF "Nothing In Life Is Free" training methods have helped me with my strong-willed dog. It's a pretty simple concept and lots of info available online.

Any good training program starts with training her, and then she trains the dog. Does anyone else live with her? Consistency with all members of the household is important.

Yep. Pretty much what I was going to say. Go with a training program that puts as much (more?) emphasis on training the human as it does training the dog.

Does she like to read? Your first comment stuck with me, and a good book on understanding dog psychology, why they are different from us, and why human instincts/training don't work with them is The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell. I believe she has other shorter books on psychology/training too.

I was getting ready to post this as well. It is the best book on dog behaviour I have read.
The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs: Patricia B. McConnell: 9780345446787: Amazon.com: Books
Copies are available at Wake County library.

I hate to pile on the lecture here, but training programs are only as good as the reinforcement you put behind them, unless you're willing to shell out a grand to send your dog off to doggy college, and even then. And, I don't think there is anything wrong with shipping your dog off to get properly finished. I may do the same when mine arrives.
