Giant markets in DC have scanners that you use as you go along. In some stores you can use your Smartphone. They also have a computer at the entrance where you can order your deli meat and cheese which is awesome. You can shop and then pick it up when it's ready.
Stop and shop has that too. But you could not pay me enough to shop there.
Will be slow to catch on with stores like HT and Publix who feel their customer service sets them apart.

I remember Stop & Shop at Webster Square. Ugh! I would never go back to those days again, but glad we lived through them. They provide a frame of reference.
I don't live in the triangle yet but it's too bad a Wegmans or Mariano's isn't there as opposed to Publix. Publix is pretty good but I think it stinks in comparison to the two I mentioned. I'm a Floridian and a lot of the hype I feel is just about not knowing any better. They practically run where I am from as there is no competition.

Completely different types of grocery stores. Publix is not trying to be like Wegman's.

They don't seem to think so, since Publix and Wegmans seem hell bent on making NC and VA their supermarket battlegrounds in the next few years. And they're frequently up against one another in all the supermarket rankings.

Mariano's is now technically a sister company to Harris Teeter.

Other than not having any other mainstream grocers as options anywhere near me, I have to believe that Floridians rank Publix highly because there isn't anything to compare it to.
As far as mainstream grocers go, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the ten closest to me in Miami Beach area all Publix. Certainly there are options like Whole Food and Fresh Market but the competition for mainstream, full service grocers is almost non-existent.
In South Beach alone, there are three Publix stores in addition to a Whole Foods, Fresh Market and Epicure. Two of those Publix locations are literally just a few blocks from each other. Publix has a stranglehold.
