Weston...GOOD. Up until this year I worked at a park on Weston, and was always surprised at the amount of speeding and accidents I'd see (or almost be in). I can't recall ever having seen a cop on that road during the time I worked there.
It is amazing how many times I have seen them catch someone there and that downhill just helps them.
Favorite fishing hole. Nice wide road with four lanes and a low speed limit. When US 1 was first built out wide they were there every day on a lane drop hole- Speed limit 55. Then the DOT engineers raised it to 65. Now you don't see a single one out there. GO FIGURE!

Still using a $150 detector from 2002. Almost every NC radar gun uses Ka or K band now. I've seen a couple bike cops using laser but honestly the traffic down here is pretty much the Wild West. 540 is basically a free for all held up only by slow drivers in left lane.

Pay to play. Cops here are using laser, that's a fact. Not all, but it's out there and it's prevalent. No one is really using K band, mostly KA. Definitely can use something cheaper, that's just one of the best setups for true protection, unless you want to mix and match like using a V1 w ALP or other combos out there.
Basically, whatever you use your level of protection will vary. The above is damn near full protection, vs just a detector (even a great one). You're right on 540, such an awesome road. But a toll road...hmmm...wonder why cops aren't sitting on it as much? (Disclaimer a for those who believe traffic enforcement is about safety and Santa is real....don't give this too much thought)
Im a big tech nerd and have always driven with a detector since I got my license back in the early 90's, but there is a basic cost benefit analysis that tells you no detector is ever worth that much. You would need five reckless driving tickets (I believe those can up to $400 each) to justify such a device.
I would suggest tailoring your speeding to include situational awareness and not only reliance on tech. Even with the best detector you can't catch laser when it's instantly switched on at a trap. You'll get the alert a few minutes before you're waiting for the ticket on the side of the road.
As for nobody using K, several triangle patrol cars have K band. Those are mostly city police. The troopers are using Ka. Problem with K is when you have an older detector with no DSP, you get a lot of false positives thanks to the adaptive cruise and collision alert systems in modern vehicles. My personal nemesis since I'm still using an older detector. I know it so well that it still works great for me, but the display is hosed and it needs a new power cable
My suggestion for anyone shopping for a detector is limit spending to $500 or less. It will pay for itself the first few times you avoid a ticket. I wouldn't drive without one at this point but so many do. The more you know
