How long is the average commute from Cary to Wake Med in Raleigh? Google Maps tells me that it's only 23 minutes if you take 40-E, but that's not including traffic. I'm not sure yet whether I'll be working 8- or 12-hour shifts at the hospital, so I'm trying to figure out how long my commute will be both for a regular 8-5 job and for when I'd be driving at 6:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Cary is massively sprawling.
The commute will vary depending on your home address.

Like Mike said, it really depends on where in Cary you're talking about.

Add into that the Fortify project (which IIRC, we're in the later half of, but still have a year or 2 to go) but also consider that this may be slightly contra-flow to traffic in some spots, but not all.

If you're traveling at non-peak times I don't think it'll be too bad, but I think you'll have lots of variation day to day.

I pass that traffic. It's really bad. I'm assuming a lot of people drive from Cary to Raleigh to work.

64/I40 interchange is horrible at rush hour. 64 can back up to Tryon.

East Cary response:

I drive from Exit 99 (Cary Parkway) on Highway 1 to downtown Raleigh during rush hour each day. It consistently takes me 22 minutes, door to door.

There will be hardly any traffic on the road at 6am and 7:30 will be moderate to low.

8 to 5 it really depends on which way you go. Where in Cary? In my experience commuting from Cary to Raleigh for 12 years, you'll want to learn alternate routes.

I was always coming from Harrison on 40 but could do 54 (chapel hill Rd) to trinity to Edwards Mill to snake around and avoid 440 when needed. Sometimes that bottleneck at Wade Ave and 440 is a disaster and you'll want to avoid it.

If you are heading closer to crossroads up off of 1 somewhere, there are other options but I never went that way as it was always more traffic-y when I did.

For the traffic on US-1/64/ there is a big difference between 7:00 and 7:30, in the area around Walnut Street. I try to make there by 7:15AM. After that, there can a back up as the traffic splits between going on I-40 and 440

This is right on. The worst traffic on 1N is always from 7:30-8:00 AM.
