We have found good homes all over Raleigh, but have been talking to numerous residents...and basically, this is Raleigh's problem. Is it true that North Raleigh is the only good part of Raleigh? Everything we have been hearing about North Raleigh is overwhelmingly positive....amazing place for families, upscale, great schools, etc. We have family in Northwest Raleigh, but they don't like it at all (not family-friendly). We have heard horrible things about Sotsutheast Raleigh, so we didn't even look in that area. Is this all true?
Sir Walter Raleigh cover your eyes and ears....where to start on this question.
Let's start with a compass. North Raleigh : if you can find two people that live in Raleigh and can tell your where north Raleigh starts and ends with any type of accuracy would mean its your lucky day. I have lived here 11+ years and to this day still get confused on exactly where the boundaries are for 'North Raleigh'. So, now that we are not exactly sure where North Raleigh is located.
Let's move to South Raleigh, East Raleigh, West Raleigh. I have friends that live in those geographical areas of Raleigh and love it. They are not ready to give up their families and buy the farm typw of loving it but they enjoy living in those areas. North-West Raleigh has lots of nice homes, parks, stores, and is part of North Raleigh which if I am reading the comment above says its the 'only good part of Raleigh'. I B Confused. Confusion aside, next point.
It is great to ask questions about areas you may want to move to and there are wonderful people in city-data that love to answer those questions but sometimes its hard to answer questions that are to general. What I may love someone else may despise. My recommendation is to come down see North, South, East, and West Raleigh and the areas in-between and make your own conclusion of what is better or worse and also weigh in on the boundaries of North Raleigh......you maybe pleasantly surprised on what you find.
The best answer I can give you is to drive around to each side of town and see the areas for yourself. You will be surprised at how many people talk bad about a particular side of town that have never even been to it.
ITB = Inside the beltline. Inside the inner circle of the 440 beltline is either most desirable or most crime ridden, depending on what street you are on It's kind of the pupil of the eye
Yeah I know, I live ITB haha - I'd say as a guideline that Capital Blvd is sort of a divider between the really good areas ITB and some less desirable areas (though there are exceptions like the areas around downtown or Mordecai that are gentrifying etc...)

We talked to many people around here, and they say North Raleigh is basically between Wake Forest and Ravenscroft School.
That map above is fairly accurate. North Raleigh would run further north than 540 now though....the Bedford folks would raise hell if you said they were practically wake forest.
So anything below Ravenscroft would be considered Midtown? That seems a little far up. I would draw the boundary at Lynn Road/Spring Forest Road for Midtown/North Raleigh.
I never said it all sucks...I've heard many areas suck and some areas are great.
Most people tend to commute to RTP from Fayetteville and Spring Lake. You should start your search there and work your way up.
