Alas, NCDOT took the cheap way out when it built the new US 1 around Cameron and Vass... no limited access. Fixing that, plus new road around Tramway, plus new road around Southern Pines to Rockingham... I think we'll be waiting a long time for all those to come together.

AASHTO has finally released their minutes from last month's meeting. I-495/Future I-495 has officially been decommissioned between I-440 and I-95 in Rocky Mount, to be replaced by I-87 between I-40 in southeast Raleigh and US-64 Business (Exit 429) and Future I-87 between US-64 Business and I-95. Be on the lookout for I-87/Future I-87 signs in the coming months.

Also, it appears that the little bit of I-440 that I-87 will follow between I-40 and the Knightdale Bypass will not be decommissioned since NCDOT never requested it. I-440 and I-87 will run concurrent there.

No news regarding I-42.

Great idea. but I'd like to see it become the 2nd interstate between Raleigh & Charlotte. I know the state would like an alternate route to ease traffic congestion on 85, they've been studying one for years. a 70mph interstate direct access from Charlotte to Norfolk would be beneficial. Maybe convert a portion of US 64 from Raleigh to Asheboro to an interstate then run it near NC 49 until you get to Charlotte. Or run it down US 1 until you get to NC 27 through Albemarle and onto Charlotte.

And why stop there? You could potentially run 87 up through Norfolk north to New York to connect with the original I-87, basically following the path of US 13 North through Maryland and Delaware.

I believe NCDOT plans on upgrading US-64 to a freeway between NC-540 and I-40 in Mocksville. It's still years away, though. They've been studying NC-49, but I don't know exactly what their plan for it is, as to whether it will be an expressway or a freeway.

Not a bad idea, but there's no chance of that happening. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (US-13) linking Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore would be very costly to upgrade, never mind that the tunnels are only two lanes. One of the tunnels will be under construction within the year to add a parallel tunnel, but the remaining tunnel won't be under construction until at least the 2030's. The bridges themselves are substandard and FHWA isn't as lenient with interstate standards as they used to be. VDOT also does not maintain the CBBT.

Another major problem is upgrading US-13 on VA's Eastern Shore. It is a very environmentally sensitive area, plus Northampton and Accomac counties have been very opposed to any idea that involves converting US-13 to a freeway.

VDOT studied upgrading that corridor back in 2006, but it was deemed not feasible due to local opposition, environmental impacts and the huge cost of such a project.

Some kind of Murphy's Law in effect here. Concurrency is most likely to happen over tiny distances where two Interstate shields cannot be placed on a map.

The $356M Asheboro bypass is under construction. Estimated completion late 2019... which means it will probably be summer 2020. At that point I expect a big increase in people using 64-49 between east Mecklenburg and the Triangle.

I always took 64-49 to college (UNC Charlotte) from home (Clayton) and vice versa. It was a lot prettier and I found it just a little quicker than taking I 85.

Once the widening between Concord and Salisbury is completed, 85 may be more reliable. But the four-lane section of I-40 between RTP and Mebane will remain a potential bottleneck, although from Raleigh one can drive through Durham instead.

While the US-70 Corridor Commission has not yet posted their minutes from last month's meeting, they have posted the 13-page Director's Report for April & May, which gives some (albeit minor) updates regarding the Kinston and Havelock bypasses. There has been no mention of the I-42 designation itself, so they appear to be in no hurry for I-shields to start popping up in Clayton and Goldsboro.
