Has anyone driven this road lately from 540 to Wake Forest - it's atrocious. Should have thought about some plans beforehand and I know you can say that about many roads in the area, but some are obvious.
When out of state people tell me they want to move to Wake Forest, I always ask if they are Work from Home-types. You could just add more lanes also but those will get filled also.
Could Capital Blvd. become a freeway with a toll road?
The North Carolina Department of Transportation says it takes four times longer to pass through Capital Boulevard’s busiest section at its peak times compared to non-peak times. It’s why the state is now on future upgrades.
NCDOT estimates between 32,000 and 65,000 vehicles travel through that stretch every day. By 2040, it’s expected as many as 75,000 are expected to per day. A plan to upgrade Capital Blvd. into a freeway has an estimated cost of about $750 million.
It is atrocious. Last couple times I've gone my GPS has sent me a back way, like up Falls of Neuse and then Old Falls of Neuse, much more pleasant of a drive in any category you can think of.
The timing of the lights doesn't seem to match the speed limit. I always think of NYC, where I was last month and took a couple Ubers and if you travel the appropriate speed the lights turn green as you hit them. And yes I realize that the lights are much closer in NYC but still.

Until you hit the double parked delivery trucks and the ensuing lord of the flies driving that Uber/taxi drivers use to navigate around those obstacles.
The only solution to fix capital blvd is to raze everything to the ground and rebuild as a limited access divided freeway with tolls during peak hours.
I could see this coming years ago when huge developments started going into Wake Forest. There were so many people showing up in this group wanting “more land” and a brand new house. But you’d dig deeper and see they were going to have commutes into DTR, RTP or Durham.

I moved away well before they did it, but I think they did a similar thing with Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, just north of Atlanta @ 285. It is now a limited access freeway (with no tolls) and side access roads. It must have been a mess when they did it, but it is much nicer now.
I think the toll road concept is the only way it will happen.
I think making it a toll road would be disastrous for both local businesses and commuters. People would just find alternate routes and move traffic congestion to those roads.

Falls of Neuse Rd is often a parking lot north of 540 already. The only other alternatives are 50 north to 98 east and Ligon Mill Rd.
I just drove on Capital Blvd from Triangle Town Center to Holden Road in Youngsville.
Got on Capital around 5:10, maybe a lot of people didn't work today as it wasn't too bad at all!
Arrived at Holden Road at about 5:37. Traffic was heavy in spots but not as hostile as I remember it.
