the Roast Grill isn't gritty?
MoJoe's?
All the long-time establishments along New Bern Ave headed out of town, like Jack's. Plenty of places down South Saunders, and all the way into Garner.
Numerous places along Capital and Atlantic between the Beltline and 540.

Good observations... there are still some gritty places in Raleigh, and its immediate periphery. Even along Hillsborough, but let's be serious, those areas are getting squeezed out and replaced with generic freshness pretty quickly.

And when I think of gritty in its true sense... I think of Philly, Pittsburgh... old rust belt towns.... I've visited and lived in Raleigh for over a decade and it has always been one of the most cleanest cities I've resided in for its size.

well, yes, we didn't belt out industrial pollution/smokestacks for generations. Raleigh has never been big on manufacturing. Distribution, yes. But not manufacture. It's why Durham has always been considered grittier - all the old tobacco warehouses and cigarette manufacturing.

Austin. It's even their slogan. Keep Austin Weird. I know people like to compare Raleigh to Austin, like sister cities when it comes to economy & government....but they are really completely different, as far as culture & scale.
