Yesterday I found 3 dollars in the parking lot of my townhome. I have also found money in grocery stores, work, etc.

If you find money, do you make some attempt to return it to its rightful owner? If you find the money in a grocery store, would you give it to the manager?

Just curious.

I found $2 doing the laundry yesterday. I consider that a tip.

Pretty much this.

Also the circumstances. If I found $100 in the woods, 30 miles from nowhere (I mountainbike), i would not really have a way to return it, so that would influence also.

I've never found money in the woods, but I've found keys, cell phones, bike parts, and once a bag of weed. The first three were found locally, so I was able to post the keys and bike parts on a local biking forum and return to the rightful owner. The phone (I've found a few), I just call the most recent number, and have always returned them. The bag of weed, well I found that about 10 years too late to do anything fun with it, so I just threw it out. (or did I burn it?)

If there's a way to identify the owner (like a cell phone or people nearby), then I'll try to return it. If not, it's just your lucky day

If there is someone better positioned than I to be the custodian of the money, like a store manager, yes I hand it over to him or her. If I find it on a sidewalk, I'll leave it if practical; somebody might return to look for it, and if someone else chooses to seize it that's not my doing. Otherwise I donate the money to charity. There are so many worthy charities to choose from.

This.

I found a wallet in a grocery cart in the Lowe's parking lot one day and yes, I turned it in at the customer service desk.

I found $110 scattered along the roadside on US64. Lucky me! Then, nearby, I found a Driver License and other papers with a name and address. I returned all to the owner. Lucky him!

I found a gold coin (yes, real gold!) at the edge of US64. I put an ad on Craig's List "Lost and Found" offering its return to anyone who could identify the country and denomination. It went unclaimed. I sold the coin to a dealer for $124 and donated the money to the Wake County SPCA.

.

This is somewhat representative of my position. If I can reasonably identify the rightful owner, it's theirs and not mine. I can keep found money provided there's no reliable way to return it to its rightful owner.

They way I look at it, karma has a way of settling all debts; if you do the right thing, the right thing often is done for you.
