The architecture and layout was typical for motels. Remember, State Road 1011 is also called "Old US1." It was a major highway in the 1920s and 1930s, running through every state capital on the east coast. There were many motels of this nature on that road. Thirty years ago many were still standing, some weathered and abandoned, others refurbed into low-buck housing for those who couldn't afford better.

This particular motel in New Hill NC was Troy's Motor Court.

Yes to SC, NC, VA, MD, NJ, RI and MA but not FL, GA, PA, NY, CT, NH, or ME (if you're thinking of states that touch the Atlantic). But the general point you're making, I agree.

You're right, "every state capital" should be "many state capitals." In that time frame US1 was kinda-sorta like I-95 today, a major north-south highway.

A distant relative traveled by car from New York City to Miami in 1929, keeping a written journal of the trip. Raleigh was described as "a dusty little town." That's not an insult, Raleigh was a very different place back then.

This street map is dated 1920, not 1929, but is the best representation I could find. Beltway? What beltway?

Very cool. I've been driving by there for years and never knew what it was.

Quite a bit of info on Troy's Motor Court online...

There's still a South Hills Mall in Cary (disregard the Raleigh address), and little about its interior appears to have changed since at least the 1980s:

I suspect the same applies to some of the outbuildings around the mall. How's that bowling alley doing, for instance?

Thanks for all the suggestions! Looks like I'm going to be doing a lot of day-tripping.

Sadly the "Screwed by the town of Cary" house has been repainted
Is this the same house that has the toilet seat and enormous Confederate flag out front? I drove by something truly weird in Cary a couple of weeks back. I can't remember exactly where it was but it was, um, eye-popping.

I think I passed this Rose's the other day on my way to lunch! Heh. I had no idea there was a whole mall attached.

The toilet seat/confederate flag house is on High House Road roughly opposite St. Michael the Archangel RC church.
The "screwed by the town of Cary" house is on Maynard Road and has been sold and rehabbed.

Perhaps you are referring to the Dreher residence at 759 High House Road in Cary.

Do a Google search on charles dreher cary nc and find many citations. He is known as a colorful character.
