Now here comes the Canes to Quebec City rumors that won't die until someone buys the team and commits to keeping them here.
Will be interesting to see how a team in Vegas does after the novelty years. I'm not sure but people said the NBA in Orlando would flop and they've had the Magic for 27 years now. Vegas though is way more of a 24/7 city than Orlando is so time will tell. I think Houston would have been a better option (instant rivalry with the Dallas Stars, loads of transplants from Alberta and the North, history of the Aeros dating back to the 70's with Gordie Howe, 4th largest city) but the Rockets owner won't allow a team in his building unless he runs said team.

NHL will do awesome in Vegas, I think. It's interesting you mention Orlando, because the NBA has quite a few teams where they are the only game in town. Off the top of my head: Oklahoma City, Memphis, Portland, Utah, and Orlando. The NHL's success in this area isn't as great, but the T-Mobile Arena looks awesome and it will have events year round...not just NHL. I think there will be more than enough people to attend games, that's where they have an advantage over places like Raleigh and Columbus.
31 is an odd number. And the NHL will have 31 teams in 2017-2018 season unless someone else gets and expansion. I'm a bit surprised that they won't grant one to Quebec....but I do think Quebec will get a team again unless they've been blackballed by the league.

Techinically I consider San Jose to be a one-sport town along with Raleigh and Columbus. Yes I know it's in the Bay Area and yes I know the 49ers moved in next door, but the Sharks up until 2014 were the only team in the South Bay area and the only one that bears the name "San Jose". The city is also part of the Silicion Valley, which is like RTP. And of course Columbus, like the Triangle, is big on collegiate athletics w/ Ohio State dominating the landscape. If the NHL were looking for another "one-sport town", Austin would be perfect. It seems the NHL in general appeals more to the IT/White collar crowd, hence why Raleigh, Columbus, and San Jose have teams and why Austin would be perfect given this criteria.
Somehow I just feel like Vegas isn't going to be quite the success others think it will be. At some point the team will suck, and if they suck when the novelty wears off are people still going to be interested or are they going to be more interested in going to the casinos? Time will tell I guess.

I think the goal is 32 teams, with the next expansion team being in somewhere in the West to balance out the conferences. If Seattle ever builds an arena I think that is where the next team goes, the NHL I do believe has wanted a team there for a long time but the city has never had an adequate arena, a reason why the Sonics left. If Seattle doesn't work out, again Houston could be a contender but again, only if the Rockets owner plays nice. Kansas City is probably another city the league is at least looking at, the Sprint Center still has no major league tenant after almost ten years of existence.
I for one could do without another Canadian team. I was pissed when the Thrashers left for Winnipeg and a bunch of Jets fans were leaving comments on sites like AJC.com acting like jerks towards Atlanta fans. One of the first games as the reincarnated Winnipeg Jets a TV commentator reportedly said "We send a special hello to the former Thrasher fans in Atlanta, all 4 of you". Very classy.
The arrogance of Canadian Hockey fans and where teams are located is not something I have not seen with NBA, NFL, or MLB fans. In other words, they aren't so territorial on who they feel "deserves" a team. But for some reason people in Canada think that Hockey should only be played in cities where it gets cold, and they are quite vocal about it. They could just be happy people here for example are playing the game in record numbers but they can't get over the fact that the NHL has teams in the Sunbelt.
I would not be sad if a Canadian team did not win another Cup in my lifetime. I thoroughly enjoyed when the Hurricanes defeated Montreal in 2002 and 2006, and Toronto in 2002, the tears from the media of those two cities was absolutely delicious. This years playoffs w/ no teams from Canada was also enjoyable for that same reason.
I'm with you, I don't think a Vegas team is a sure fire thing by any means. Are there enough permanent residents in Las Vegas that the team will have actual fans and not just pick up whoever is in town. There are so many other options for entertainment, the hockey team is going to have to do something special to get people coming to games.
