Bi-Lo at one point wanted to put a store at that spot (across from University Ford).
Bi-Lo, under Ahold's ownership, was seeking to expand further into Durham, Raleigh, and eastern North Carolina in the early 2000's. It has closed stores and exited markets after being divested from Ahold circa 2004-2005. Bi-Lo presently operates 28 stores in North Carolina. There is speculation it will be exiting the state.

There was another site they were looking at on Fayetteville Rd. near Woodcroft Parkway, but opposition by area residents caused that project to fall through.

I wonder what the grocery market would be like if Bi-Lo successfully executed its expansion plans in Durham and eastward across North Carolina.

Out of all the grocery stores here, I think Bi-Lo would have catered to Kroger and Lowe's Foods customer base the most. It could have also taken share from Winn-Dixie and Food Lion as well. Harris Teeter wouldn't be as concerned with Bi-Lo since they're the most upmarket out of the traditional grocery stores.
The better question to ask is what would happen if Ingles gets here.
As Carolina Knight has pointed out, that one was all the way across town in South Durham. The new location being discussed here is in North Durham, up past Duke Regional Hospital.
My apologies, you are correct. In putting in the address to google maps I clicked on South, which is right down the street from MLK.

Winn-Dixie was fading in the market. It exited in 2004 and its Raleigh Division was merged into the Charlotte Division, which folded a year later. Bi-Lo could have taken over Winn-Dixie's stores to increase its store count.
Bi-Lo would have been an upgrade from Food Lion and Lowe's Foods at that time. Today, the supermarket sector is or will be dominated by Harris Teeter, Kroger, Publix, and Walmart Neighborhood Market.

Ingle's is dominant in the western Carolinas. Its footprint across northern Georgia, western North Carolina, upcountry South Carolina, and eastern Tennessee could make it an attractive acquisition target. Any additional stores may be restricted to its footprint.
