Hmmmmm ... I would probably be tempted to set up some sort of trap ... a large cardboard box with some food inside placed close to the garage door (I'm not totally sure what snakes like, but I saw a recent YouTube vid of a snake in someone's kitchen attempting to eat an egg whole. I'd be willing to sacrifice a carton of eggs for the cause) ... when the snake slithers into the box for dinner, use a long handled broom to shove the box out of the garage door and close it quickly.
if it was 4 ft long and really fast - as you suggest - then you have no worries. it truly probably knew you had a rodent in the garage it was going to hunt for supper.
there's not a snake around here that will eat a dog...seriously.
Thank you all so much for your replies. I have a 150 lb great pyrenees who I would hope would murder it if it came inside. I also have an 8 lb dog which would make good snake food I guess. It was very thin but very long and black so you're all probably right that isn't anything to worry about. I'm not thrilled though and the garage is still open. Hopefully it will slither out soon as I have to go to bed and want to close that door. Thanks BoBromhal, good to know that no snakes will kill my doggies.
Could be a black racer, black rat snake, eastern rat snake. They are all similar and relatively calm, especially the larger ones (at least the ones I've encountered). Pick them up and they can range from nervous to acting like they've known you their whole life. Great for getting rid of rats, I like having them around when possible.
They won't hurt even tiny dogs/cats etc. I wouldn't let them near smaller pet birds though.
Could the "long black snake " be a garden hose ???
I responded to a call from a elderly woman...about a snake in her backyard... turned out to be a piece of iron pipe that was left over from some construction work , next door. Did I mention that she had very poor eyesight ?.
So funny! Black snakes are completely safe. Grab your camera. It will leave on its own accord by nightfall. To keep it from coming back, if you are snake-a-phobic, leave a light on in the garage for a couple of days.
