Hello,

Work moved to N. Raleigh and going to change the hours from 9:00am -6:00pm for office work. Unfortunately no chance of going or leaving early or late. Employer is not flexible at all(cannot use lunch hour as flexible). Currently live in Apex and child going elementary school in Apex. Even with after school daycare it only goes max till 6:00pm.

Have to get from N. Raleigh to Apex by 6.00 pm to pick up kid or pay big fines...I think $5.00 per minute. No grand parents or relatives near by.

How are people managing...any daycare that will pick up kid after school and take then to their daycare till 7:00 pm etc/ or any state regulations ?

What about neighbors? Any you trust or perhaps a high school or college kid you could pay to pick yours up and bring them home until you get there? Another option may be looking into a different after school program that is offered where they pick your child up and take them elsewhere.

The only other thing I can think of is changing your job. I had to change mine a while back due to childcare issues because it wasn't flexible with our childcare options. I'm much happier now and it's all worked out for the best but it was really stressful at the time. Good luck!

If your home is in Apex and the school is in Apex is taking the bus home after school an option? In this scenario I'm assuming your child could meet a friend /neighbor from your neighborhood at the bus stop when they are dropped off and stay with them until you get home from work.

Have you checked to see if any of the providers in your son's afterschool program do any work on the side and could take your son at 6pm and have you pick him up asap afterward? I mean, it would be extra money, but if your child is well-behaved, you might get lucky and find someone.

A lot of the day cares also do before/after school care, so check around there may be one that has hours that would work for you. It looks like a place called The Learning Experience in Apex has their after school run till 6:30, for instance.

A 6:30 -7 pm pickup is an awfully long day for a young child. Is there any way you could arrange for a babysitter to pick your child up from school?

You could inquire at the high school or check your neighborhood nextdoor.com forum for interested babysitters. A lot of my daughter's friends in high school and college are after school "nannies."

That is a horribly long day for a child.

I'd move, or find a different job if at all possible.

If your employer is really that inflexible, all I can think of is either to change jobs or change where you live, to be closer to work. It does seem like a very long day for the child, but other than a paid babysitter, you can't expect a neighbor etc to take on that responsibility every single day.

Agree with Francois. Plus if neighbor child is out of school for any reason you're really screwed.
