Headed to the RDU area tomorrow for our first exploratory trip to get a feel for the area.

We are looking to possibly relocate to the area from Baltimore. I work from home so commute isn't a huge concern but would like to be relatively close to "things to do". I have done a fair amount of research on areas but wondering if the board can help me home in on a neighborhood that I don't want to miss while I'm down there.

Wish List:

4 bed 2+ bath (approx 3,000 sq ft)
Single family home
New or Newish construction
Great Schools
Neighborhood pool, playground, bike trails etc.
Ideally situated around a "town center" retail concept or one in close proximity.
$500k or less range.

Any help on must see neighborhoods that would check these boxes would be great help.

Thanks!

Just a head's up. Most people call this area "The Triangle" (for Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill), or just Raleigh/Durham.
RDU is usually reserved for the name of the airport.

Look in this area for a central location. In Durham but close to all types of shopping, Chapel Hill and 40 to the airport or Raleigh.

Put this into Google Maps
35.946436, -78.949015, 35.903315, -78.940754

Example:
3618 Darwin Rd, Durham, NC 27707 | MLS #2064045 | Zillow

This is a huge spread out area and there are scores of subdivisions that fit your criteria. You're going to need to look around while you are here, see what you like and then re-focus your question with some more specifics.

Be aware that newer construction will make the school situation somewhat dicey as there are capping and reassignment issues where there is explosive growth. You should familiarize yourself with those issues if you haven't already.

If you want a neighborhood with lots of families, pool, etc near shops and restaurants you can find that but it won't be near downtown (unless by near you mean 25+/- minutes). North Raleigh, Apex, Holly Springs and Cary all offer those options in the <500 pricepoint. In fact at that price you'll have a large selection even.

Wake county schools are constantly changing so while you can guess what school your child will be assigned to they may change it the next year to accommodate the rapid growth here.

Off the top of my head I think a more planned subdivision with greenway trails, a pool, parks and playgrounds is what you're looking for. A few worth checking out in that pricepoint are Heritage (Wake Forest), Wakefield, Falls River (Raleigh), Durant Trails and Greystone/Stonehenge (Raleigh). Obviously I'm more familiar with north/east parts of the county but there are plenty of others around who know Cary, Apex and Holly Springs better and can suggest a few.

Since commute isn't a concern, I would look at Heritage in Wake Forest. Great neighborhood for families and great schools.

Yep, heritage. Walk the trail at the end of Marshall Farm Steet in Heritage. That greenway will connect to the neuse river trail.

Sorry, I did not see schools. You better go with the other suggestions.

That greenway doesn't connect to the neuse river, but it does go to a very nice waterfall. You can get to the Neuse River from the connector trail off Burlington Mills Road.

Another neighborhood you might like is Bedford.

Note that some Heritage homes do not attend Heritage Schools so you will want to note that. All three Heritage schools are fantastic.
