I am thinking we rent a furnished townhome for a few months to get the lay of the land since we are moving across country and totally unfamiliar with the area. I have 2 days to get a general idea of Cary and Raleigh next month. In doing some research online I see quite a few furnished corporate apartments for rent but I do not see townhomes. Is this going to be hard to find in Cary even if we aren't limited by a budget? Between figuring out housing that doesn't tie is in to something we don't like for a year, the capped middle school situation, and having pets this is getting pretty complicated. Aargh.

The furnished requirement as well as the short term lease will make finding what you need difficult. You may need to look at one of the rent-to-own furniture stores for temporary furnishings.

The pet(s) make it even tougher!

I'd be looking at apartments with short term leases and rent the furniture.

I am at least finding several apartment complexes in Cary that are furnished and accept pets with a minimum 3 month lease. That might be our best option but I am going to keep searching online!

Try looking at renting an unfurnished apartment then renting the bare bones essential furniture for a couple months. Or try a longer term rental on AirBnB.
