Was just about to suggest Hanging Rock, both Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock are maybe a little more than 30 miles from Winston Salem. I prefer Hanging Rock but these two are the closest options.
It sure as heck will be if you go to Boone or Blowing Rock. It will be 10 degrees cooler there maybe even 20 depending on elevation. They've been having a heat wave recently same as we have. It got up to 83 yesterday there. You have to get up above 3000 ft to feel the difference, though. The town of Boone and Blowing Rock are both above 3000. If you go to Morrow Mt or Hanging Rock or Asheville you won't see the drop that you do if you go up higher. The high temp for the past 7 days on Grandfather Mountain at the Swinging Bridge is 73. Quite a bit cooler than Raleigh.
Another vote for South Mountain State Park. It's kind-of near nothing and the waterfall loop is a nice hike. Morganton is probably the closest town but the park is south of the town.
Morrow Mountain is another good option. If you take US 1 south to highway 24/27, it's a beautiful drive there too.

Yep.
Our place is at about 3300 ft. elevation and the temperature drops 10 degrees F in 30 minutes as you drive up from Marion. If you're really desperate you can go up further to the top of Mt. Mitchell where it probably drops another 5-10 degrees.
Just back from a great week in the mountains and enjoyed mornings in the 60s and worst-case temps in the low 80s.
