Does Durham county have a tornado siren to alert people of an approaching tornado? I woke up in the middle of the night the other night to the sound of heavy rain and with warmer weather coming, I began to wonder how I would know if a tornado was coming in the night.

not that I'm aware of. You can purchase one of those weather alert radios and keep it in your room if it concerns you.

I was really taken aback when I was listening to NPR one day and a 'Stephen Hawking' soundalike came interrupted the show to inform of a tornado or storm warning.

So, yes, there is some sort of severe weather warning but only if are listening to the radio/ watching tv.

Cheers

M

We moved in recently. But we slept thru last night's rain without any problems.

What is the danger of a tornado hitting the RTP area ? Hurricanes are a more plausible danger than a tornado isn't it ?

neither are big enough concern to lose any sleep over.

Been here all my life, and seen some bad storms, and yes, tornados and hurricanes. But they are few and far between!

RRunner, I know exactly what you're talking about. No, there are no tornado sirens in this area.

Tornados seem to be cropping up all around bordering states of NC, but not actually hitting NC. Tornados in the Triangle area are very rare and they tend to be weak when they do happen. As for Hurricanes, well we are inlaid over 100 miles, so by the time it hit our area it is usually just a strong tropical storm. All in all, we don't have to worry too much aabout either.

This what I thought so based on reading about this area before moving here. When was the last big storm that caused serious damage in this area ?

Do I have to look for house with trees not too close ?

honestly, the last storm that I REALLY think of is Fran, and that was in 96?

Fran took 6 pines through my moms house (fortunately she and my younger bro and sis were sleeping DOWNSTAIRS) so I personally don't buy homes with pines close enough to fall on the house.

theres no guarantee, of course, wind could carry it over...but I feel better that way

seriously though, it doesn't happen often enough to 'worry' about!!!! If I found a perfect house, and pines were close, it wouldnt stop me from buying it.

The 1988 F4 North Raleigh Tornado was the last real tornado in Raleigh city limits. It was a very strong tornado with F5 tornadoes being the strongest and F1 tornadoes being the weakest. The unusual thing about the tornado was that it happened towards the end of November! Here is a map of where it came through and a link about the tornado as well. Also is a video of a WRAL news cast about the tornado that came through

Raleigh Tornado

YouTube - WRAL-TV News 11/28/88 - Raleigh Tornado Coverage

I was 5 years old and a 3rd grader in my elementary school died when the chimney caved in on her house. During show-and-tell my friend showed us her scar from when the bedroom window shattered and cut her leg. The tornado was also in the middle of the night. It destroyed my daycare and I had to go to another one while they fixed mine. It also tore down a K-mart on glenwood avenue. It is now the Walmart that is very close to the pleasant valley shopping center. Tornadoes are rare and requiring sirens would be a waste of money. Just tune into Greg Fishel and he'll tell ya what to do when skies get scary.
