Those of you who's lived here longer than a year (), how does this winter compare to last year's temp wise?

We just got our first gas bill that covers an entire month. They say the average temp was 44.

The reason I am asking is that our bill from Jan 16 - Feb 15 totals only $155. When I started service, PSNC gave me the average usage of the previous owners. Their Jan - Feb 2007 bill was the highest - $428!

Is it the weather, or are we just using it more sparingly? Did the cost p/ therm change?

Our home is approx 2550 sq feet, heated with gas. Im a stay at home mom with 2 toddlers. During the day we keep the temp at 65 (I could do with 2-3 degrees warmer but sweatshirts and socks works just as well, we are not cold), turn it down to 62 at night and 60 when we go out for more than just a few hrs. We have energy star electric oil filled radiator heaters for the childrens rooms at night, it only added $10 to our electric bill in MA per month, WAY cheaper than OIL! (Im keeping an eye on our electric meter, we are doing great so far!) We didnt use the gas fireplace since our tv is upstairs in the bonus/play room anyway. We a gas stove and I cook almost every night (I love to cook!)

Actually, this year seems warmer (or at least more warmer days) than last! Is your home a new one? How's the insulation?

I'd attribute most of the difference to the temperature in your home. You keep your thermostat set at a much lower temp than almost everyone I know. I'd imagine the previous owners kept the house in the low-70s 24/7 and probably used the gas fireplace liberally. You'd be surprised how quickly those 2 differences will burn up the gas!

We moved there from MA, so are used to cold weather! I guess thats why 65 is comfy. Maybe that will change once we have acclimatized!

The house is 9 yrs old. I think its insulated pretty well since it maintains the temp for quite some time (unlike our newer previous home in MA where the furnace constantly ran).

Compared to oil heat, I love the gas!

Thanks for you replies!

Our PSNC bill is always high in the winter. We try to limit the use of our gas logs. Our water is heated with natural gas, and I think we would see our bill decrease a lot if we limited our hot showers !!!!

The cost to heat water is small change compared to heating your house.

The average temps for this winter have been unseasonably high. Really strange and curious.
