We have an old car that is finally giving up the ghost. We've only had it for a year, but it's started to strand us at times, and is not very reliable. To fix it (or even to investigate fixing it) would cost more than what we can afford to do. Is there a good way to sell it for parts? I don't feel comfortable trying to sell it to someone as a personal vehicle, but we'd like to get a little something out of the deal. Any ideas where to start?
OP, what is your timeline? The way to maximize value is to strip all of the individual parts from the vehicle and sell them on ebay to others with the same model looking to repair items as they break. That takes some patience, mechanical ability to identify/remove the pertinent parts and then finding someone to haul the hulk of steel away when you are done (not that big a deal if you dont sell tires/wheels). Also, if you don't have a garage to store the shell of the car, your neighbors may begin to hate you.
You can also donate it, for example to NPR (National Public Radio). But I think it might need to be drivable. They would presumably off load it to a suitable last resting place. You would take a tax deduction on it.
We call LKQ and they come out and get it. Last one we got $375 for it. We've also gotten rid of them on Craigslist.
