Hello all

You might have heard these questions many times,
We have Bermuda grass and what is the best weed killer?
This is my first time i am going to treat my lawn and what is the most effective way?

Is it better to go with Spray kind of thing which gets attached to water hose(Bayer), or use weed 'n' feed(turf builder)?

Also i have some patches where there is no grass, how to fix those areas?

Bayer products are good. Tank mix them with water and use a pump sprayer. Wait two weeks for results.

This website has lots of info on what they call "Bermuda grass". it seems that this is easily confused with Crab grass. true Bermuda grass is a highly desired grass for some people, it is a warm season grass. Crab grass has no useful purpose.

Be careful in what herbicide you pick. Some kill everything that is green.... some focus only on non-grass weed species. Best is to get advice from a home supply store. To fill in the empty spots....good 'ol fashioned grass seed, wheat straw mulch, and daily shower of water until you see green sprigs coming up.

For weeds, spray 2,4-D. It will kill the weeds, but not the grass. Using a hose end sprayer is easiest. In the winter, when the lawn is dormant, you can spray roundup. That will rid you of any cool season grasses mixed in.

The dead spots are interesting. Bermuda fills in and repairs quickly. So you shouldn't need to do anything. However, if it doesn't fill in, you need to figure out why. It could be a high/low spot, shade, or pollution. You might try adding a layer of top soil and see if that works. You might also try cutting some plugs out of your lawn and planting them in the dead spots.

Common Bermuda is most certainly a weed.

Seems to be a need for some clarification. Are you saying you have a Bermuda lawn with weeds or some other turfgrass with Bermuda invading it? What grass are you trying not to kill.

Assuming you are saying your lawn is bermuda and how do you kill the weeds in the bermuda, it depends on what kind of weeds.

I had decent luck with Image Nutsedge killer for...nutsedge.
For bahia grass, I used MSM Herbicide which is good stuff.

But the best solution with bermuda is to wait until it goes dormant. Not like November dormant, but like fully dormant, dead of winter dormant, january freezing cold dormant...and then use round-up.

That's one advantage you get over fescue...you get to essentially reset every year.

are you peeps saying that warm season grasses - bermuda, zoysia, etc - that go brown/dormant in winter can be treated with roundup in the winter, and only the weeds will be killed? Not the dormant grass?

I don't know enough about zoysia to want to tell you something that isn't true...but with bermuda, so long as it's totally dormant (not just brown) you can. So we're talking soil temps reaaaaallly cold...January and February to be sure.

Anything green....ZAP
