he got a learner permit, so an adult with driving license need to sit in the front passenger seat. I will let him to do the behind-the-wheel test soon so he can drive himself to school.

Do I need to add him to my current auto insurance policy before and on the behind-the-wheel test?

thanks.

Ask your insurance company. They definitely know the correct answer for your situation.

Nope. You do not need to add him until he's got his license.

Correct, in NC that is the law. The permit period is a free pass before the financial reality sets in.

But when you take him for his driving test, they will not take him for the test until they have proof that he is added to the policy.

Yes, RedZin and twingles are correct (I went through this recently).

Once you get an appointment for your child's actual driving test at the NCDMV, call your insurance company and let them know you need form DL 123. Your child cannot take the test if you do not show up with this form.

You don't need to add anything. Insurance companies insure the car, not the driver.

Yeah. Good point. You do need that form.

This is the best and correct answer. I did call my insurance company this morning. They issued my a signed DL 123, then my son went to DMV with it, that's all
