Husband has possible transfer to The Raleigh area, from Greensboro, NC. I'm a professional painter - working towards it anyway - and would love love LOVE to know where all the arts are in the Triangle area.
Been to NC Museum of Art, love that. Jerry's Artarama is also awesome.
Are there any artsy neighborhoods? Clubs? Functions? Up and comings for the arts? Interested in ALL of it. Thank you so much for your help!
if in Raleigh, make sure to visit on First Friday of any month. The art galleries and studios generally stay open after 5/6 pm for your perusal.
Artspace is in downtown Raleigh in the City Marekt building, at the corner of Blount and Davie/Martin (it runs a block). Full of artist studios, workshops, kids camps, etc.

Thanks, this is great. Do you know of any "weird" neighborhoods? You know, hippies, yoga types, folks that paint their houses purple? LOL

Durham.
Well, I know you said Raleigh and there are spots there, too, mostly close to downtown. I have friends in Oakwood who are pretty funky artsy types.
Durham does have a great creative vibe, though.
Indy Week will help you with artsy events. The Hopscotch Festival is going on this weekend in Raleigh with lots of crazy stuff happening. They did Ink Wars, 8 foot canvas, black paint and 60 minutes to create. While most people think of Hopscotch as a music festival there's a whole design component to Hopscotch, too: Hopscotch Design Festival .
There's plenty of crafty folk in Raleighwood. Try to get as close in as you can.
all 3 main towns - Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill - will have an arts scene. Chapel Hill's will be university-cetnered, and then in neighboring Carrboro. Durham's will be downtown, and west of downtown. Raleigh's will be downtown - the neighborhoods would be Oakwood, Mordecai, Boylan Heights, and Glenwood/Brooklyn. University park/Cameron Villae & Park will have some too.
The real estate is pretty expensive ($200+/sqft), and I don't recall seeing a budget in your other posts/threads.
Also, when in Durham, don't forget to check out The Scrap Exchange in Lakewood Shopping Center. It's definitely a good resource if you're a crafty person. Not too far from there, you have a pretty vibrant arts scene downtown, and you also have the Nasher museum of art. Centerfest, which is a big art festival is also happening soon as well, and there's people out selling arts and crafts.
The Boylan Heights neighborhood (next to downtown) have an ArtWalk through their neighborhood on the 1st Sunday of December each year. If you google it, you can keep up through their Facebook page.
If you're open to Chapel Hill and Carrboro, pretty much wherever is good. Older neighborhoods are best, but I disagree with Bo about university-centered. Not sure if that means neighborhood near the university — that's more studenty, not what I would recommend, or that the university has lots of arts — which it does, but there is plenty in town, too, that is unconnected to the university. You just don't want the brand new subdivision with the HOA because they won't let you paint your house purple. We're chock full of hippies and yoga studios over here. I live in a 60/70s era neighborhood and one of my neighbors is a well known photographer. I have a friend in another similar neighborhood who is a full time painter. I know tons of artists actually, and they live all around, probably some even in brand new HOA subdivisions, but probably not in purple houses.

SWEET. Great, thank you, this is awesome info! Ink Wars.....I could so get into that! Will definitely look into Raleighwood. I need to start making lists of neighborhoods and property values, cross referenced with my list of possible schools.
That's the thing, my daughter is artistically gifted. She plays piano, now learning violin, draws VERY, very well for her age group, and she is in the AG groups for Math and language arts. So, while it's good for me, it has to be good for her. Time to warm my Excel spreadsheet making skills! *rubs palms vigorously, with grin*
